Celebrating National Supported Internship Day 2025
Today marks National Supported Internship Day, a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of young people with learning difficulties and disabilities as they take their first steps into meaningful employment.
At Landmarks Specialist College, we have been delivering Supported Internships since 2016, with outstanding results. Our interns gain valuable real-world experience in sectors of their choosing, after first developing essential skills in our specialist training facilities. These include our Bistros, Farm, and our very own pub, The Archer. Many also undertake external work experience during their first year, especially if they are still exploring their career aspirations.
Our impact speaks for itself. Since 2016, 101 of our interns have successfully secured employment in their chosen fields. Over the last three years alone, 92% of our interns have moved into paid employment, and our current retention rate stands at an impressive 79%—a significant contrast to the national average of just 25% after one year.
This academic year, we are proud to support 27 interns on their journey towards employment, our highest number yet. Each of them is working closely with an employer, gaining the skills and confidence needed to transition into the workforce.
Supported Internships provide a life-changing opportunity for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities to develop skills, build confidence, and secure meaningful employment. These programmes not only benefit the interns but also create a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
Having forward-thinking employers on board is crucial, as they play a key role in breaking down barriers and creating opportunities that empower young people to thrive. By embracing Supported Internships, businesses are not just filling vacancies—they are investing in dedicated, talented individuals who bring fresh perspectives and real value to the workplace.
As we celebrate National Supported Internship Day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the employers who champion this initiative, creating meaningful opportunities for our interns. We also applaud our incredible interns, who prove every day that barriers to employment can be overcome. Together, we are building a more inclusive and accessible future for all.
