Harvey: Developing Skills for Greater Independence

Harvey’s Story:

Pathway

Adult Life and Independence

Planned Outcomes

Greater Independence

Key Achievements

✓ Increased resilience

✓ Positive relationships with peers and staff

✓ Engages fully in every college session

Year One

Harvey joined Landmarks on the Life Skills pathway, working towards greater independence, communication, and functional literacy and numeracy skills. While he was initially hesitant to socialise, he gradually built positive relationships with both staff and peers and began engaging confidently across all of his sessions.

Harvey worked towards a communication target focused on expressing his feelings using the Zones of Regulation, which he has met with steady progress. He also demonstrated growing independence in sessions, often beginning tasks on his own and supporting staff by helping collect and hand out resources.

In Creative Media, Harvey used Canva to produce self-help magazines and show tickets, and became noticeably more confident speaking aloud to the class. In Performing Arts, he took part in the pantomime, the Pride Project flash mob, and Battle of the Bands – engaging with each activity with enthusiasm and effort.

Year Two

In his second year, Harvey enrolled in an Entry 3 Hospitality and Catering qualification, building on his enthusiasm for the college Bistro and developing practical skills that will support his independence going forward. He secured the role of the March Hare in the Christmas pantomime, rehearsing his lines with real commitment and learning a dance routine for the production.

He also performed a ribbon dance in the ‘Dances Around the World’ show, demonstrating good focus and enthusiasm throughout. Harvey has been working on developing positive peer relationships and understanding appropriate boundaries, with guidance from his tutor and the welfare team.

He has made good progress in this area and is now keen to continue working on it more independently.
