Inside The Archer: Real-World Hospitality Training for Young People with SEND

A Real-World Setting That Works for Everyone

Unlike traditional classrooms, The Archer offers a hands-on learning experience in a fully operational pub. Learners take on roles in the kitchen and behind the bar, giving them a chance to understand all areas of the trade. Over time, they choose where they feel most confident and are supported to develop their skills in that area.

Shifts are scheduled just like they would be in a real job, giving learners the chance to experience different hours in a safe, supportive environment. This real-world approach helps learners become more independent, while building the confidence and resilience they need to succeed after college.

Gaining Qualifications That Open Doors

While gaining hands-on experience, learners also work towards industry-recognised qualifications that help them move closer to employment. These include:

  • Employability Skills Training – covering key workplace skills such as timekeeping, teamwork, communication, and interview preparation.
  • Cellar BIAB Training (Level 2) – practical training for learners interested in brewing and cellar management, including hygiene, stock control and safety.
  • APLH Personal Licence – a qualification needed to work in licensed premises, offering learners a real advantage in the hospitality job market.

All training is delivered in a way that supports individual needs and learning styles, making it accessible for learners with a wide range of abilities.

Confidence, Communication and Independence

Beyond the skills and qualifications, learners gain so much more from their time at The Archer. They grow in confidence, improve their communication, and develop a real sense of responsibility. Many learners say that working at the pub helps them feel more independent and ready for the next steps in their lives – whether that’s moving into paid work, continuing education, or Supported Internships.

It’s also a great space to build social skills, make new friends, and feel part of a team.
