Every year on 8 September, people around the world recognise International Literacy Day.
Led by UNESCO, the day highlights the importance of literacy and the opportunities it can create. From reading a bus timetable and following a recipe to communicating with others and applying for a job, literacy plays an important role in everyday life and independence.
What is International Literacy Day?
International Literacy Day has been celebrated since 1967 and raises awareness of the importance of literacy around the world.
Literacy is about much more than reading and writing. It can help people access information, communicate, make choices and develop the confidence and skills needed for everyday life.
Find out more about the day on the official UNESCO International Literacy Day website.
Why Does Literacy Matter in SEND Colleges?
For young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), literacy looks different for everyone.
In a specialist college, learning can be practical, personalised and connected to real life. For some learners, literacy may mean developing reading and writing skills, while for others it could involve recognising important information, using technology, communicating their needs or following instructions.
At Landmarks Specialist College, we support young adults with SEND to develop meaningful skills that build confidence, independence and prepare them for their future.
Literacy and Functional Skills at Landmarks
Functional Skills help learners develop practical English, Maths and Digital Skills for everyday life.
Our Functional Skills programme supports learners to build knowledge and confidence through meaningful learning, while our range of qualifications provides opportunities for learners to work towards recognised achievements based on their individual needs and goals.
Building Confidence and Independence
Literacy can support learners in many areas of everyday life, including:
- Reading signs and information
- Following recipes and instructions
- Shopping and managing money
- Using digital technology
- Travelling independently
- Communicating with others
- Preparing for employment
At Landmarks, we know that every learner’s journey is different. Whether it is reading a menu independently, writing a CV or gaining a qualification, every step forward matters.
Celebrating International Literacy Day
This International Literacy Day, we are celebrating the power of literacy and the difference meaningful learning can make for young adults with SEND.
