Kevin enrolled at The Archer in September 2023, motivated by his passion for hospitality and catering. During his baseline period, staff set clear qualifications and targets to develop his knowledge and practical skills. In his first year, Kevin focused on building confidence in taking on new tasks, working methodically, and interacting with peers. He gained valuable hands-on experience, including a day at Greene King headquarters, where he cooked a meal from scratch and learned behind-the-scenes operations. Kevin also achieved Level 1 English, ICT, and Hospitality & Catering, and became an active member of the Learner Council. By the end of the year, he had developed a strong foundation of skills and was ready for a supported internship.
Year Two
Kevin’s goal was to gain experience in both front-of-house and back-of-house roles to maximise his employment opportunities. At The Archer, he developed his understanding of the hospitality industry through practical learning in the in-house Bistro. He began a Supported Internship at The Phoenix as a general kitchen assistant. After a few months, he was invited to trial busier shifts as a food runner. Kevin embraced the challenge, building confidence, communicating with customers, and performing independently with support from his job coach.
Paid Employment
Kevin’s dedication and growth were recognised when he was offered paid employment at The Phoenix. He has flourished into a confident, skilled, and valued member of the team, demonstrating the impact of the personalised support Specialist FE colleges provide.
