Living Independently: Everyday Skills for Confidence

Becoming more independent is one of the biggest milestones for any young adult. For learners with SEND, it’s a journey full of learning, growth, and small victories. At Landmarks College, our Life Skills Pathway is designed to guide learners every step of the way, helping them build confidence, resilience, and practical skills for life beyond college.

1. Everyday Tasks

Independence begins with small, everyday tasks that make a big difference.

  • Cooking: Start with one simple meal a week – pasta, stir fry, or jacket potatoes are quick, affordable, and build confidence.

  • Cleaning: Keeping a personal space tidy creates comfort, pride, and responsibility.

  • Laundry: Learning to wash, dry, and fold clothes builds practical life skills and routine.

At Landmarks College, learners receive structured support to focus on one skill at a time, practise regularly, and celebrate each success, making progress achievable and rewarding.

2. Managing Money and Bills

Handling money is a key part of independence, and Landmarks’ Life Skills Pathway supports learners step by step:

  • Budget for weekly expenses like transport, snacks, or social activities.

  • Use apps or planners to track income and spending.

  • Work with Landmarks staff to understand bills, savings, and direct debits safely.

Mistakes are part of learning, and Landmarks supports learners in building confidence through real-life practice.

3. Travel Training and Getting Around Independently

Learning to travel safely and confidently can be a huge confidence boost.

  • Travel training at Landmarks helps learners plan routes, read timetables, and navigate public transport.

  • Start with short, familiar journeys and gradually build up to new destinations.

  • Staff and carers provide guidance while allowing learners to take the lead.

This approach helps learners gain practical independence skills while building self-confidence and safety awareness.

4. Communication, OT, and Adaptive Equipment

At Landmarks College, support doesn’t stop at practical skills.

  • Occupational Therapy (OT) helps learners develop routines, fine motor skills, and confidence in daily living tasks.

  • Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) supports communication skills, helping learners express themselves clearly and effectively.

  • Adaptive equipment is available where needed, ensuring every learner can fully participate and succeed.

These services are fully integrated into the Life Skills Pathway, helping learners overcome challenges and develop independence at their own pace.

5. Routine, Structure, and Wellbeing

Independence thrives when there is balance and structure:

  • Keep a daily routine for meals, medication, and sleep.

  • Use visual timetables, reminders, or apps to stay organised.

  • Include time for hobbies, exercise, and relaxation.

Landmarks College works with learners to establish routines while encouraging choice, helping them develop responsibility, resilience, and wellbeing.

6. Knowing When to Ask for Help

True independence also means recognising when to seek support:

  • “I need a bit of help with this.”

  • “Can you show me again?”

  • “I’d like to try it myself first.”

The Life Skills Pathway at Landmarks teaches learners that asking for help is part of growing independence, and staff guide them in taking the lead while offering support when needed.

Living independently isn’t about doing everything alone. At Landmarks College, every meal prepared, journey made, and choice taken is supported with guidance, encouragement, and tailored support such as OT, SLT, travel training, and adaptive equipment, creating a foundation for confidence, skills, and a fulfilling future.
