The summer holidays can be a great opportunity for young adults with SEND to relax, spend time with family and enjoy their interests. However, a break from their usual college routine can also be difficult for some young people.
With a little planning, the summer holidays can be made more enjoyable, predictable and positive.
Keep some structure
Although the holidays are a chance to relax, having some structure can help. Regular meal times, activities and sleep routines can make the day feel more predictable.
A routine does not need to be busy. Simple activities such as going for a walk, helping to prepare lunch or spending time on a favourite hobby can provide structure.
Prepare for changes
Changes to routine can sometimes feel difficult. Talking about plans in advance, using a calendar or visual timetable, and explaining changes as early as possible can help.
Encourage independence
The summer holidays are a great time to practise everyday skills, including:
- Preparing a simple meal
- Helping with shopping
- Managing money
- Using public transport
- Completing household tasks
- Planning an activity
These everyday experiences can help young adults with SEND build confidence and independence.
Make time for interests
Activities based around a young person’s interests can help develop confidence, communication and new skills. This could include music, gaming, sport, animals, cooking, creativity or spending time outdoors.
There are also lots of places to explore across the areas Landmarks serves. Families could visit Rother Valley Country Park for a walk or outdoor activity, explore Weston Park Museum or Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, or visit Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham.
In Doncaster, Cusworth Hall, Museum and Park offers space to explore and learn, while Yorkshire Wildlife Park provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and see animals from around the world.
For families in Nottinghamshire, Wollaton Hall and Park, Sherwood Forest and Rufford Abbey Country Park are all options for exploring the outdoors.
As the end of the holidays approaches, gradually talking about returning to college can also help make the transition smoother.
