The Power of Supported Internships: Transforming Lives and Communities

Meet Brian, Our Wayfinder Manager: The Power of Supported Internships in Transforming Lives and Communities

As the Wayfinder & Supported Internship Manager at Landmarks Specialist College, I have seen first-hand the incredible impact that Supported Internships have on young people with learning disabilities and difficulties. These internships are more than just a stepping stone into employment; they are a gateway to independence, confidence, and a future filled with opportunities.

Why Employers Should Get Onboard

Currently, only 4.8% of people with learning difficulties, known to local authorities, are in paid employment. This is a stark and concerning statistic, highlighting the barriers faced by individuals with additional needs when seeking meaningful work. However, at Landmarks Specialist College, we are proving that with the right support, this figure can be drastically improved. Over the last three years, our Supported Internship programme has achieved an outstanding 92% success rate, securing employment for our young people upon completion.

Employers who engage with Supported Internships benefit enormously. By providing opportunities for young people with additional needs, businesses gain loyal, dedicated, and hardworking employees who bring unique skills and perspectives to the workplace. Furthermore, an inclusive workforce promotes innovation, enhances workplace morale, and demonstrates corporate social responsibility in action.

The Impact on Learners and Social Mobility

Supported Internships offer young people the opportunity to develop essential skills in real working environments. For many, it is the first step towards independence, financial security, and social inclusion. The confidence gained through work experience is life-changing, opening doors that were once considered closed. Employment empowers individuals, reducing reliance on social services and increasing overall well-being.

From a social mobility perspective, employment transforms not only the lives of young people but also their families and communities. A young person in employment contributes to the economy, becomes a role model for others, and helps shift perceptions about what people with learning difficulties can achieve.

The Role of the WayFinder Work-Connect Team

At Landmarks Specialist College, our WayFinder Work-Connect Team plays a crucial role in making these success stories a reality. Our team works tirelessly to bridge the gap between employers and our interns, providing:

  • Tailored job-matching – Ensuring the right fit between employer and intern.
  • Ongoing support – Helping both the young person and employer navigate the employment process.
  • Workplace training – Supporting skill development in real work settings.
  • Employer guidance – Assisting businesses in creating inclusive environments that work for everyone.
The Additional Benefits of Employment for Young People with Learning Difficulties

Beyond earning a wage, employment offers a host of benefits for young people with additional needs:

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
  • A sense of purpose and belonging
  • Opportunities for social interaction
  • Greater independence and life skills development
  • Improved mental health and well-being

At Landmarks Specialist College, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to succeed. Through our Supported Internships, we are not only changing lives but also challenging outdated perceptions about disability and employment.

Now, more than ever, we call on employers to join us in making a difference. By working together, we can continue to increase employment opportunities for young people with learning difficulties and ensure a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
