Wrapping Up #NationalCareersWeek: Building Confidence and Career Pathways

As we wrap up the final day of #NationalCareersWeek, it’s been fantastic to reflect on a week full of opportunities for learners to explore the world of work, meet employers, and build confidence in their future career pathways. For many learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, experiences like these are an important step in developing independence, understanding workplace expectations, and discovering the different opportunities available to them after education.

Throughout the week, learners met professionals from a wide range of industries and heard inspiring career stories. These sessions helped break down barriers to employment and showed learners that there are many different routes into meaningful work. One of the standout experiences was a visit to Greene King’s headquarters in Burton upon Trent. Hosted by Jason Radbourn, learners were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the offices and professional kitchens before taking part in a hands-on cooking masterclass. Working alongside Jason’s team and former learner Dan, they prepared their own meals, learned professional techniques, and experienced the pace and teamwork of a busy kitchen environment. The visit gave learners a real insight into careers in hospitality and left many feeling inspired by what they could achieve.

Back on site, the week continued with a variety of engaging guest speakers. Adam Moorewood delivered an inspiring session about his journey and demonstrated his impressive biking skills, showing how dedication and passion can shape a career. Learners also enjoyed a fascinating dog grooming talk and demonstration from Charlie Goodwin, alongside a farrier demonstration that introduced the specialist skills involved in equine care.

Careers in construction and infrastructure were explored in a session delivered by Tilbury Douglas, while Natalie Suchacki spoke about the wide range of roles within facilities management and the skills employers look for. Some of the most inspiring moments came from hearing real journeys into employment. Shezz Bringlow spoke about her pathway from education into work, while Leo shared his experience of completing a Supported Internship and how it helped him build confidence and workplace skills. Learners also had the chance to explore different working environments through visits to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Creswell Crags, and Clifton Park Museum. These visits helped learners see first-hand how workplaces operate and introduced them to careers in local government, heritage, and museums.

Alongside meeting employers and visiting workplaces, learners also focused on developing key employability skills. Activities such as job searching, SWOT exercises, and mock interviews helped learners practise communication, build confidence, and prepare for future opportunities. Sessions also explored important topics such as professional behaviour, workplace expectations, and what it means to be “fit for work”.

As #NationalCareersWeek comes to a close, it’s clear that experiences like these play an important role in supporting learners with SEND to explore their interests, develop workplace skills, and start planning for their futures. A huge thank you goes to all the employers, organisations, and speakers who shared their time and expertise throughout the week. Their support helps create opportunities that empower our learners and open up doors to future employment.
